Currently under development, expected release January 2010.
The RDM-LAN is a data monitoring device with email capabilities. It can function as a stand-alone device, monitoring temperature and one other analog or digital signal (remote temperature, pressure, switches etc.). It also has the ability to receive email commands to control up to 16 outputs. This output ability requires the addition of an expansion module.. The monitoring ability can also be expanded with digital or analog expansion modules.
The unit is packaged in an extruded aluminum case and an external wall adapter. Auxiliary power connections are available for battery back-up applications. A USB interface is also provided to interface with a PC. This provides the user with the ability to adjust its function, through the use of a packaged Windows application. This application allows the user to configure the RDM for the monitoring of temperature sensors and other signals. The Windows Configuration program can support multiple units with “Super User”, or a single unit with the basic “User” status. Some functionality is added when the level of “Super User” is granted.
The RDM-LAN works by monitoring the levels of pre-determined variables. For example, a temperature sensor could be connected to the unit, and a minimum and maximum temperature could be set. If the temperature in the room drops below, or rises above either of those temperatures, the RDM will trigger an e-mail notification to inform the user. Text messages to cell phones or smart phones are available through your cellular provider.
Another feature of the RDM-LAN works the opposite way. The user can instruct the RDM to control output devices, by sending the RDM an e-mail message. These instructions cause the RDM to trigger an action such as turning on your air conditioning system, alarm system, or sending you an unscheduled “health check”, which notifies you on the condition of all variables. This feature, however requires the addition of the RRND expansion module.
A scheduled “health check” can be configured, so on regular intervals, your RDM unit will keep you informed on any conditions it is monitoring. The RDM will send a notification message, with a status in the subject, and a full description in the body. This is especially useful when traveling or monitoring remote locations. A carbon copy can also be configured, sending the same information you receive to another address, such as a family member, or a secondary e-mail address.
A photo gallery is shown below, showing the current prototype of the RDM-LAN, currently in late stages of development.
